You better have a good business plan to pay off this thing in less than 6
months…2/3rds of that 50K should be going to rent, utilities, crew, …

Hey guys. I hope Im not out of place saying this. But if someone can
correct me. What is the significance of shooting short films on such high
end equipment. I completely understand quality but at what cost. Im looking
at this more from a producers stand point. If I raised $5,000 to film a
short film I know a lot of people would want to go right away and rent or
buy a bunch of gear. They would make an amazing little film that would look
beautiful. But then all of their budget would be spent up. Why dont people
just focus on managing their budget a little more and spend more towards
the marketing and actually have their film go somewhere past vimeo,
facebook or small indie film festival. I have a lot of respect for Film
Riot but there smart and they can play with these toys because they know
how to market themselves using brand integration or way of creating sources
of income to fund this equipment and videos so they dont pay out of pocket
for these items. ( I can only hope). People need to understand that
marketing value is so much more important than fancy cameras. If you can
shoot on a canon 550D. I know its not as good quality but its cheaper than
a Scarlet, than me as a producer would rather invest my funds into a film I
know might go somewhere with filmmakers who need pretty equipment and don’t
have the talent to film frugal. Thats what separates Hollywood from
Independent filmmakers. I know its an unfortunate world we live in but if
you want to get past the Independant status you have to think corporate and
what will sell. Your audience doesnt care on wether this was shot on a dslr
or cinematic camera. As long as it looks GOOD and is entertaining. Think of
how Spielberg and Cameron were making films in the early days without all
    this stuff.

Ryan Connely: Let’s get the Red Epic and shoot in 5K, and then upload it to
youtube in 720p! and then show people how great the footage looked!

Why are you using a compact prime on the Epic? (not hating/flaming just a
    question) It’s just I don’t get it why you use a 3000€ lens on a 20.000€+
